University of Pune, one of the premier universities in India, is positioned in the North-western part of Pune city. It occupies an area of about 411 acres. It was established on 10th February, 1948 under the Poona University Act. The university houses 46 academic departments. It is popularly known as the Oxford of the East. The Pravara Medical Trust is the parent Organisaiton of the University and was established in 1972 in a small village Loni of Ahmednagar District (Maharashtra State) by a visionary Padmashri Dr. Vitthalrao Vikhe Patil, the founder of Co-operative movement in India.

Datta Meghe Institute of Medical Sciences a Deemed University was granted this status by the University Grants Commission in 2005. Its Chancellor is Honble Shri Dattaji Meghe and its founder Vice-Chancellor is Dr. Ved Prakash Mishra.
